Overview

In this assessment, you are asked to use the learning obtained from the Industry 4.0 and Smart Supply Chains and Digital Twins in Smart Supply Chain modules to write an analytical report and address the following problem.

Problem Statement

As part of their move to digitize their supply chain network, Coolies is considering implementing a digital twin.

To gain greater insights on how to go about developing digital twins and the nature of the capital and technology required, the IT and Supply Chain teams collaboratively plan on implementing a digital twin for a small portion of the supply chain network as a pilot project.

This pilot project will consist of:

  • An ice cream production plant in New Zealand (manufacturer)

  • A DC (Distribution Centre) in Victoria

  • Selected retailers in Victoria

Based on the insights gained from the pilot project, Coolies can determine how they want to go about the implementation of a digital twin for their entire supply chain network and the technologies they may require.

In this assessment, the focus will be on the DC processes and Steps 1–6 of the digital twin conceptualisation framework.

  • By Step 6, the identification of appropriate smart devices and the manner in which digital measurements will be taken for each process-level KPI (KPI-Ps) should be defined.

  • A simple visualization of the DC processes is provided in the input data, representing how data flows from one DC process to the other.

  • Note: Step 2 (visualizing the supply chain network) is excluded from this assessment.

The DC, which receives the ice cream from the factory, is based in VIC and consists of 4 processes:

  1. Receiving and Storing

  2. Picking

  3. Packaging

  4. Distribution and Delivery

Assessment Components

Step 1: Identification of Three Digital KPIs for DC Node

  • Using the traditional KPI-SCs data provided, Coolies plan to develop three digital supply chain KPIs (KPI-SCs) for DC nodes.

  • Based on the workbook and DSCI paper, students need to:

    • Identify 3 Digital KPI-SCs for the DC node.

    • Use the provided template table in “DC Supply Chain KPI Tables” of the workbook.

    • Explain how each KPI-SC is calculated and why it was chosen.

    • Justify the selection of digital KPI-SCs and identify the data sources for each.

Step 2: Digital Supply Chain Conceptualisation for DC Node

Using the provided input dataset (with Factory solution tabs as a benchmark):

  1. Process Mapping – Develop a Turtle Diagram for each process in the DC (Step 3).

    • Identify suitable process-level KPIs (KPI-Ps).

    • Highlight acceptance criteria and calculation method (Step 4).

  2. Cyber Risks – Describe any cyber risks associated with the digital KPI-SCs identified in Step 1.

    • Map KPI-Ps against KPI-SCs to show which processes contribute to supply chain-level goals (Step 5).

  3. Comprehensive Table – Create a table that includes:

    • What is measured for each DC process

    • How it is measured

    • KPI-Ps and acceptance criteria

    • Associated KPI-SCs

    • Digital data source for KPI-Ps

    • How measurements are digitally taken (Step 6)

    • Cyber risks for each KPI-P

Consider whether any KPI-SCs from Step 1 should be changed to ensure alignment between process-level and supply-chain-level measurements.

Submission Requirements

  • Submit a single MS Word file (no other format allowed).

  • Include screenshots of analysis/visualizations (Excel results, graphs, tables).

  • Screenshots must show your Excel username and Student ID (as in LMS).

  • Integrate screenshots into your Word report.

Important Hints

  1. Support recommendations with academic literature (APA7 referencing).

  2. Final submission must include analysis, results, and discussion in one MS Word file.

  3. Use screenshots of Excel outputs with visible username and Student ID.

  4. Be prepared: students may be randomly selected to present reports online or face-to-face after submission.
