This task provides you with opportunities to learn the knowledge (GLO1 & ULO1) and skills (GLO3 & ULO2) required in the study and practice of business intelligence and databases. By completing this task, you will develop your skills in researching, understanding, applying, evaluating, and presenting business intelligence dashboards required of business intelligence professionals.
Information dashboards are crucial tools in business intelligence (BI) and analytics platforms. They provide a comprehensive overview of vital data by consolidating various metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) into a cohesive display. This visual representation lets users quickly grasp essential information at a glance, facilitating rapid decision-making. Moreover, these dashboards are designed to support extensive data exploration, allowing users to investigate specific metrics. This feature uncovers underlying trends, patterns, and details that may not be immediately apparent, offering deeper insights and a more detailed understanding of the data.
In this assessment, students will apply their business intelligence knowledge and practical skills to develop business intelligence solutions.
This assessment setting will be on the scenario selected in Assessment Task 1. That is the chosen scenario from (i) SafeTel Communications and (ii) MediHealth Hospitals in your Assessment 1 (presented below for your reference). As an analyst, your primary task is to utilise the MS Power BI tool to develop a business intelligence solution, which includes dashboards tailored to three distinct audiences in your selected scenario, and produce a written report.
SafeTel Communications, a major Australian telecommunications and internet service provider, seeks to strengthen its data governance and cybersecurity practices following recent global data breaches in the telecommunications and data brokerage industries. The company plans to implement Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards to monitor and analyse key areas such as Data Privacy, Network Security, Customer Trust, Compliance, and Operational Efficiency. These dashboards will support decision-making for stakeholders including the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Data Protection Officer, Compliance Managers, and Network Operations teams. Metrics covered may include (but are not limited to): data access frequency, unusual access patterns, customer consent status, data retention compliance, incident response times, network downtime, data breach severity, and employee cybersecurity training completion rates.
MediHealth Hospitals, a nationwide healthcare network with hospitals and clinics across Australia, aims to enhance its decision-making capabilities across key operational areas such as Patient Care, Clinical Services, Financial Management, Human Resources, and Supply Chain Management by implementing Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards that provide timely and accurate insights for different stakeholders such as hospital administrators, medical directors, finance officers, and HR managers. These dashboards can cover metrics such as (but not limited to) patient admission and discharge rates, bed occupancy, treatment success rates, equipment utilisation, staff workload, operating costs, procurement efficiency, employee satisfaction, patient feedback scores, and departmental performance.
Note: All the above company and/or institutional names are fictional names only.
Dashboards:
Your task is to develop at least three business intelligence (BI) dashboards for three distinct audiences (at least one Dashboard per audience) of your chosen scenario using Microsoft Power BI. For example, if you choose Scenario 2, one dashboard could be for the Hospital Administrator, one for the Medical Director, and one for the Finance or HR Manager. You can select three distinct audiences appropriate for your chosen scenario. You must produce the actual dashboard visuals in the MS Power BI tool. Each dashboard should consist of at least four insightful visualisations.
Datasets:
You may use the dataset(s) used in Assessment 1. If you plan not to use the same dataset(s) used in Assessment 1, you can (i) create artificial dataset(s), or (ii) utilise any publicly available dataset(s). Real-world datasets are not compulsory. Feel free to make reasonable assumptions or refine the data as needed. Please remember to give credit to the dataset owners or the GenAI tool used to create the dataset. Real-world datasets are not compulsory. The following are some useful resources (but not limited to) for finding datasets.
Report:
You must produce a written report that describes the BI solution for the selected audiences, including the developed dashboards. The written report should include 1) objectives and advantages of your BI solution, 2) BI dashboard screenshots and commentary, and 3) overall findings and recommendations based on your analysis. In addition to the main text, references, and required appendices, should also be included. Please refer to ‘Report Guidelines’ for specific details of the report.
BI Dashboard Commentary:
The discussion of each dashboard should begin with a full image of the BI dashboard, followed by a relevant commentary. To ensure that you provide a comprehensive discussion of dashboards, you must include visual samples of the BI dashboards you produce (i.e., the screenshots of the BI charts/dashboards must be presented and explained in the written report) and include any reasonable assumptions you may have made. If you think the best presentation or visualisation is to use, say, a pie chart, then discuss using a pie chart and indicate what the pie chart would show, what the benefits of using a pie chart are, and discuss the chart’s findings and insights in your commentary. Please ensure that you include a discussion of at least four charts/visualisations per dashboard. Justify why these BI solutions could provide insights and why those attributes are laid out as you proposed (feel free to include all other relevant justifications).
Recommendations:
Based on the three dashboards developed, provide at least three specific, detailed recommendations (at least one recommendation per dashboard). These recommendations should be derived from your analysis and make sense to the relevant stakeholders.
Certificate of Completion ‘Power BI Essential Training’ LinkedIn Learning Course:
You are required to provide evidence of successful completion of the ‘Power BI Essential Training’ LinkedIn Learning Course and attach the certificate as an appendix to your report.
