Aim of the Assessment:

Reflection is an important skill in professional practice. It is related to quality improvement, safety and professional development. This assessment assesses students' reflective skills and encourages them to reflect on their clinical readiness before clinical placement. It stimulates students' thoughts, feelings and attitudes related to clinical placement and to explore ways to overcome any gaps and areas for potential development/improvement related to their knowledge, skills and attitudes when providing care to people with mental health issues. This reflective activity is transformational, allowing students to discover new ways of thinking and responding to consumers of mental health services and how to use this learning in future clinical placements.

Assessment details:

Students need to address two (2) of the following:

  1. Critically reflect on your own attitudes, beliefs, values, qualities and culture and consider how this may influence the way you interact and provide care to mental health consumers while you are on clinical placement and your practice as a nurse in the future
  2. Identify any issues, concerns, fears related to communicating with mental health consumers, families and other health care professionals
  3. Reflect on how and in what ways you can apply your knowledge, skills and attitudes in mental health while you are on clinical placement
  4. Examine your own level of confidence and competence related to developing a person-centred therapeutic relationships with mental health consumers and families
  5. Analyse your own understanding related to potential role while you are on clinical, in facilitating consumers' recovery focusing on consumers' strengths and well-being
