You are asked to design an indoor or outdoor play space for an age group of your choice (0-6 months, 6 months-1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, or 3-4 years). Consider elements such as the layout and available resources, how they are used, and their purposes. You may use any computer program to create the design, or it can be hand-drawn. Your design must be inserted into this template (in the section below) and clearly labelled. In a separate section following the design, provide a 300-word written statement explaining how your personal philosophy on play-based pedagogy has informed your design for this particular age group.
The theme of the design is “Imaginative Nature Play Corner” (Outdoor). It is an outdoor corner with nature-based theme that nurtures creativity, enhance sensory exploration and establish social connection among children. The material resources are loose parts including natural, materials, child-safe tools, water play containers, picture books about nature, puppets and storytelling stones. The resources are chosen if they are suitable for children of this age group, additionally soft ground covers (mulch), shaded areas, fencing, first-aid kit in sight. The play-based pedagogy is designed with the belief that play is crucial for learning as per the Early Years Learning Framework. This design is the reflection of the theories provided by Froebel and Vygotsky, where Froebel emphasized on the child-centered learning and designed material that encourage creativity and hands on exploration. Similarly, Vygotsky reinforced the significance of social interaction and cultural context in cognitive development under an adult guidance (Bone, 2021). Personally, I incline towards an educational setting that foster holistic development, stimulate autonomy and encourage curiosity.
The play-space is designed for outdoor activities for the children aged 3-4 years to enhance their exploration, creativity and connection with nature. According to Reggio Emilia Approach, the environment serves as a teacher for the developing children that nurtures children’s agency and inquiry (Birinci,2017). The design has incorporated mud kitchen and natural loose parts that stimulate sensory and symbolic play that is crucial for cognitive and language development.
According to Gehlot, (2021), Vygotsky theory of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which discusses what a learner can do on their own and with help highlighting that cognitive development is often the result of social interaction. Hence the children co-construct the knowledge during collaborative play. This space is designed such that social interaction is encouraged whereas the open-ended materials align with theory of cognitive development by Piaget suggesting sensorimotor intelligence, preoperational thinking, concrete operational thinking, and formal operational thinking reinforcing the notion that children are active constructor of knowledge.
This nature themed space will promote the wellbeing providing calm and restorative atmosphere necessary for emotional regulation. For this particular design I intend to incorporate storytelling materials from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, aligned with Principle 4 of the EYLF to promote inclusivity and cultural diversity. In general, this design ensures safety, inclusivity and age-appropriate developmental challenge, nurturing children through play (ACECQA, 2023).
