Assessment Task

Review the literature on the theoretical approaches to clinical consultation. Write a report of 2500 words outlining the model/s that best align with nursing practice. Construct a model of nursing consultation based on theoretical constructs you believe most useful.

Task interpretation

The assessment task is to look at consultation theory (medical and allied health) and apply it to nursing practice. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ approach to addressing the assessment task. You can choose one model, or you can ‘cherry pick’ what you think is appropriate from several different models. Have a look at the article by Pawlikowska et al. for a more comprehensive overview of consultation models (see link below).

Consultation (interviewing, history-taking and physical examination) is dependent on the communication skills of the clinician so these should be addressed in your report as appropriate. The article by Cox and Li provides some insights into the importance of language and communication in the consultation process (see link below).

Please review the rubric before you commence work on this assessment. You are required to provide more than just a descriptive account. Your writing should demonstrate your analysis and critical thinking and should be supported by reference to the literature as appropriate.
