How to Write a Case Study?

Step 1: Define the Research Questions

Before starting to write a case study, it is important to clearly define the problem or the issue to be studied. This will help to ensure that the research will be relevant and that the conclusions drawn are meaningful.

Step 2: Select a Case

Once you have developed your problem statement and research questions, you should be ready to choose the specific case you should focus on. A good case study has the potential to:

Step 4: Collect Data

There are various research methods one can use to collect data on the topic you are working on. However, sometimes case studies can also collect quantitative data.

Step 5: Describe and Analyse the Data

When working on a case study, you need to paint a complete picture by bringing together all the relevant aspects. The data from the case study can be analysed using numerous methods, such as content analysis, thematic analysis or ground analysis.

Now comes the question, who will you report your findings? Well, it depends on the type of research you are working on. Some case studies are structured like a thesis with separate sections for method, findings and discussion. While some are structured like standard scientific papers.

You can also use a narrative style to explore the case from various angles to analyse its meaning and implication. However, in all cases, no matter what structure you are using, you need to provide contextual details about the case and connect it back to the existing literature and theory.

Step 6: Draw Conclusions

The case study's conclusion should be based on the data analysis and relevant to the study's research questions. The conclusion must be presented clearly and backed up by evidence.
