Purpose

The purpose of this assessment task is to:

  • Review and reflect on policies and resources in order to identify culturally appropriate approaches and strategies that support the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander standpoints in educational environments with a view to promoting reconciliation; and
  • Develop an understanding of key theories that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait self-determination and sovereignty.

Assessment Structure

This assessment is to assist you to develop an awareness of how Australian government policies, both historical and ongoing about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and ongoing colonisation, impacts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Understanding the impacts of these policies historically is key to understanding current issues of injustice facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and contributing to inequity and inequality.

Movements, such as the Aboriginal rights movement were forged by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples resisting and criticising government policies that impacted on their rights as Indigenous Peoples and as sovereign peoples. These policies have had and continue to have devastating effects and consequences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, such as the Assimilation Policy and it's relationship to the Stolen Generation.

    2. Choose 3 policies: 2 historical and 1 current and write a review based on your research findings on your chosen policies and your understanding of how they have and continue to affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
