Climate change and its environmental impact on Jeddah

According to (Almaliki, et al. 2021), Jeddah is located between 20°13′55″ N to 22°05′25″ N and 38°15′31″ E to 39°40′00″ E and lies 949 km from Riyadh (capital city). Currently, Jeddah is the second largest city in KSA with a mixture of coastal plains, hills, beaches, mountains, plateaus, and valleys/wadis, etc.

Whenever a certain region is analyzed, its climate is one of the factors that is taken into account. Literature confirms that the climate has many variables, including: atmosphere, air temperature, surface pressure, state of oceans, glaciers, trees, etc. (Werndl, 2016). The climate changes are due to the emission of air pollution. especially due to emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), that causes a significant impact on the climate (Kumar, 2021). Similarly, the climate changes of a city are visible from its increased air temperature, melting glaciers, storms, floods, decreasing polar ice caps, increased heat waves, rising sea levels, and increased deforestation (Meteoblue, 2024). All this is evident in Jeddah’s case.

According to (Almaliki, et al. 2021), Jeddah’s climate is classified as a hot desert, with long summer seasons and, mild winters. It persists at a high temperature, throughout the years, that exceeds 40 °C in the summer and reaches 48 °C, in the summer. Also, it experiences minimal rain, and thunderstorms in the winter season. The yearly temperature change of Jeddah from 1979 to 2023 is presented in Figure 2:

(Meteoblue, 2024)

Both the graphs in Figure 2 show that over time the temperature of Jeddah is getting warmer, due to climate changes (Meteoblue, 2024).
